Shure KSM313/NE - A Modern Twist On An Old Standard

Ribbon microphones have always been a staple in the world of studio production and more commonly, stage use as well. Ribbon mics of old always had one main drawback, SPL handling. Lots of the old ribbons couldn’t handle SPL levels of more than 105-110dB before running into the potential of physical damage to the ribbon. Things are changing now with modern ribbon designs. The Shure KSM313 is one of these.

The KSM313 is basically a rebadged Crowley & Tripp "Naked Eye". Shure bought the Crowley & Tripp line back a few years ago and are now producing the KSM313 and KSM353. They are still hand built here in the US using all of the original C&T tooling and manufacturing process.

The KSM313 ribbon microphone uses a patented ribbon material that Shure calls Roswellite™. The new material is extremely elastic and even has some memory properties. It allows the KSM313 to handle SPL levels of up to 146dB across a 30 - 15,000Hz frequency response. You won’t ever ruin this ribbon with high SPL!

Another feature that makes the Shure KSM313 unique is its dual-voice bi-directional pickup pattern. When addressed from the front (the side with the Shure badge) the mic has a very dark, warm characteristic, perfect for guitar amps and any extremely bright source. When addressed from the back side, the mic gets a little brighter, with a gradual roll-off above 10KHz.

Add Warmth to Anything

The Shure KSM313 truly stands alone in the ribbon microphone category. It's dual-voicing really adds to its versatility. It is a surprisingly great choice for male voice-over work. When addressed from the back side, the KSM313 has a very warm tone but has just enough top-end energy to make the voice cut through.

When used for micing a guitar amp, the front side of the KSM313 is incredible. Guitar tracks sit right in the mix without any harshness or brittleness in the higher frequencies. Paired alongside an SM57 on a Marshall guitar cabinet, you cannot go wrong for great guitar tones.

We've also found the Shure KSM313 to be extremely useful at recording acoustic guitar when paired with a nice condenser microphone. The possibilities are virtually endless.
