The RME Babyface is a high-end digital USB audio interface for home studio and portable use. When you need professional quality converters,as many inputs as possible, and reliability in a small portable package, the Babyface has you covered. Built on RME's rock solid Hammerfall USB audio technology, the Babyface can provide ultra-low latency with multiple channels of audio. It's small, compact design makes it simple to carry in your laptop bag so you're always ready to record no matter where the job takes you. Let's take a look at some of the Babyface's incredible features...

Analog I/O with High-End Mic Preamps

Babyface provides two balanced XLR Mic/Line inputs, two balanced XLR Line outputs, and two 1/4"' TRS headphone outputs. The Babyface includes RME's latest generation of A/D & D/A converters that allow recording up to 192kHz with incredible dynamic range.

The XLR microphone inputs are digitally controlled and have independent 48V phantom power on each input. The microphone preamplifiers provide up to a whopping 60 dB of gain that is adjustable in 3 dB steps. The digital control over the preamps allows for recallable settings and precise level matching between the two inputs. Preamplifier levels can be controlled via the single knob on the unit itself or via the included software.

The Babyface also provides one 1/4" Hi-Z input for connecting instruments like guitar and bass.

Digital I/O & MIDI

In addition to the analog I/O, the Babyface features up to 8 channels of digital I/O via the built-in TOSLINK optical connections. The optical ports can be used as ADAT with optional SMUX support, or as SPDIF with sample rates up to 192kHz. When used in combination with an external ADAT converter/preamp, the Babyface tops out at 10 inputs and 12 outputs. Now you can track drums with ease anywhere the job takes you.

To round out the I/O, the Babyface includes full MIDI connectivity to help you interface with lots of different MIDI instruments and equipment.

TotalMix FX

The next generation of TotalMix delivers hardware mixing/routing with lots of new features and a highly improved usability. For a seamless integration of the new features TotalMix has been rewritten from the ground up. The DSP mixer now not only matches features of high-end digital consoles but even adds effects like a 3-band parametric EQ plus Low Cut on all input and output channels. The Babyface also provides a separate FX send bus for all inputs and software playback channels, feeding two effect engines: Reverb and Echo. Every output channel includes a FX return control for the FX output signal.

Improvements over Classic TotalMix:

  • New design and improved usability
  • Control Room Section: Dedicated section for the main output (e. g. studio monitors) and other monitoring outputs (e. g. phones). All existing stereo output channels can be freely assigned as source for the control room section channels.
  • Four definable groups for Solo, Mute and Faders
  • Switchable Mono and Stereo channel view
  • Channel Options: Stereo Width, MS Processing, Phase L/R
  • Trim mode: Adjusts the volume for all routed signals of a channel. This option allows to modify the volume of all sends of a channel simultaneously, equalling a hardware's trim functionality.
  • Unlimited Undo and Redo
  • FX Sends and Returns: One send bus for every input/playback channel with Reverb/Echo
  • Expandable channel view for channel settings and EQ setup
  • Slim channel mode for selected or all channels, to save space or give a meter bridge view
  • 2-Row Mode: reduces the height of the mixer to two rows for smaller displays
